What Are DTF Transfers?
DTF transfers, also called Direct to Film transfers, are printed designs made on a special transfer film using CMYK and white ink, then finished with adhesive powder. Once produced, the transfer can be applied to apparel with a heat press. This makes DTF a strong option for colorful artwork, detailed logos, smaller orders, and designs that need more flexibility than traditional screen printing.
DTF Transfers vs Custom Shirt Printing
Order DTF transfers if you want printed transfers that you can apply yourself with a heat press. Choose custom shirt printing if you want Twisted Swag to provide the garments and complete the printing for you.
If you need finished custom shirts instead of transfers, visit Upload & Go Custom Printed Tees or Design Studio.
Before You Order
Please choose the transfer size that matches your intended print area and upload clean, high-quality artwork. Transparent-background PNG files are usually best for many apparel designs. Artwork should be submitted at the correct size when possible, with clean edges, strong resolution, and no unwanted background.
If your artwork is low resolution, blurry, pixelated, or includes unwanted background areas, the final transfer may reflect those issues. Clean artwork helps produce sharper edges, better detail, and a more professional finished result.
Material
Premium DTF transfer materials consist of a clear polyester film coated with a release layer, topped with high-quality CMYK and white water-based inks, and finished with a polymer adhesive powder. This combination allows for vibrant, durable prints on many apparel fabrics while supporting strong color, detail, and wash resistance when applied correctly.

DTF Transfer FAQ
Who should order DTF transfers?
DTF transfers are a good fit for DIY creators, clothing brands, schools, businesses, event organizers, small shops, and Phoenix customers who want printed transfers they can apply with a heat press.
What artwork works best for DTF transfers?
Clean, high-resolution artwork works best. Transparent-background PNG files are often a strong choice for apparel designs. Avoid blurry images, screenshots, low-resolution logos, unwanted backgrounds, and tiny details that may not transfer cleanly.
How do I choose the right DTF transfer size?
Choose the transfer size based on how large you want the design to appear on the garment. Twisted Swag will automatically resize your artwork to fit the selected transfer size during processing, so make sure you select the size that best matches your intended print area.
Do DTF transfers work on cotton and polyester?
DTF transfers are designed to work on many common apparel fabrics, including cotton, polyester, and cotton-poly blends. Final results can depend on the garment, heat press settings, pressure, temperature accuracy, and application process.
Are DTF transfers good for full-color logos?
Yes. DTF transfers are a strong option for full-color logos, detailed artwork, gradients, small apparel runs, brand merch, event graphics, and custom designs that would be harder or less practical with traditional screen printing.
Can Phoenix customers order DTF transfers locally?
Yes. Twisted Swag is based in Phoenix, Arizona and supports local customers, businesses, schools, brands, creators, and organizations that need DTF transfers for custom apparel projects.
What happens if my artwork is low quality?
Low-quality artwork can affect print clarity, small details, edges, and final transfer quality. For the best results, submit clean, high-resolution artwork at the correct size with a transparent background where needed.
Pressing Instructions
- Adjust the heat press to 330°F.
- Set the pressure to high.
- Pre-press the garment to remove moisture.
- Position the DTF transfer and apply pressure for 15 seconds.
- Allow the garment to cool completely.
- Peel off the DTF transfer when the garment is cold.
- Optionally, press the garment again for 5 seconds.
FAQ & Troubleshooting
Issue: DTF print is lifting off the garment and transfer film is not releasing easily.
- Increase the temperature by 10°F, as some heat presses may not accurately maintain temperatures or provide uniform heating.
- Increase pressure to ensure uniform contact across the bottom platen.
- Make sure the garment is completely cold before removing the transfer to prevent the adhesive from sticking to the cold peel film.
Issue: DTF print has watermarks after pressing onto the garment.
- Inspect the DTF transfer before pressing. If it feels oily, slimy, or wet, cure the transfer to remove excess moisture by placing it under the heat press or running it through a conveyor dryer.
- If the issue persists after pressing, wipe the print with a clean cloth to remove moisture and press again.
Issue: Small lines or details are not transferring to the garment.
Make sure the print on the film includes white ink for small details to transfer. If small details are too fine, increase the size of those details and reprint.
